Why It Is So Difficult to Ask for Help – And How It Can Be Achieved
In our society, self-reliance is highly valued. For many, achieving as much as possible independently, being autonomous, and shaping one’s life autonomously is an important goal.
However, for people with disabilities, this ideal can be in tension with their own life reality. What does it mean for one’s self-image if certain things can no longer be managed, or cannot be managed alone? Especially with increasing age, this question becomes more pressing for many Thalidomide survivors.
This workshop invites participants to explore this area of tension and its various facets. Following a joint introduction, participants will discuss in small groups what can help in accepting support and asking for help. Personal experiences and perspectives are expressly welcome.
Subsequently, the groups will present their thoughts and findings, reporting on which suggestions resonated with them most.
