More than 60 years after the drug Conter\u00adgan was with\u00addrawn from the market, the effects of the phar\u00adma\u00adceu\u00adti\u00adcal scan\u00addal are still felt today by those affected and their fami\u00adlies. But how have people with thalidomide-related disabil\u00adi\u00adties shaped their lives? What diffi\u00adcul\u00adties did they have to over\u00adcome, what paths did they take, and what gave them strength?<\/p>\n

Dr. Christina Ding-Greiner explores these ques\u00adtions in her book \u201cLeben mit Conter\u00adgan \u2013 Gesch\u00e4digte, Ange\u00adh\u00f6rige und Freunde berichten \u00fcber die Auswirkun\u00adgen des Arzneimit\u00adtels\u201d (\u201cLiving with Conter\u00adgan \u2013 Those Affected, Rela\u00adtives, and Friends Report on the Effects of the Drug\u201d). In it, she brings together biograph\u00adi\u00adcal accounts describ\u00ading the phys\u00adi\u00adcal, psycho\u00adlog\u00adi\u00adcal, and family-related conse\u00adquences of the drug.<\/p>\n

These life stories reveal just how differ\u00adent the expe\u00adri\u00adences and paths of those affected can be. They touch on the desire for social recog\u00adni\u00adtion, profes\u00adsional oppor\u00adtu\u00adni\u00adties, part\u00adner\u00adship and family, but also personal disap\u00adpoint\u00adments, unful\u00adfilled wishes, and ways of coping with last\u00ading burdens.<\/p>\n

Not every\u00adone has managed to achieve their life goals. Yet the accounts show just how much personal commit\u00adment, courage, and strength those affected have brought to their jour\u00adneys. The book offers insight into indi\u00advid\u00adual coping strate\u00adgies while also show\u00ading how strongly social condi\u00adtions shape life with a disability.<\/p>\n

Christina Ding-Greiner is a physi\u00adcian and grad\u00adu\u00adate geron\u00adtol\u00ado\u00adgist. During her many years at the Insti\u00adtute of Geron\u00adtol\u00adogy at Heidel\u00adberg Univer\u00adsity, her work focused, among other things, on aging among people with disabil\u00adi\u00adties. Since 2010, she has dedi\u00adcated herself inten\u00adsively to the effects and long-term conse\u00adquences of Contergan.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>
