While the drug Conter\u00adgan was with\u00addrawn from the market in Germany as early as 1961, the active ingre\u00addi\u00adent thalido\u00admide contin\u00adued to be used in Brazil, partic\u00adu\u00adlarly to treat leprosy. Inad\u00ade\u00adquate controls and insuf\u00adfi\u00adcient infor\u00adma\u00adtion about the risks meant that, even in later decades, chil\u00addren were born with severe malfor\u00adma\u00adtions caused by thalidomide.<\/p>\n
In her book \u201cAtrav\u00ades\u00adsando Fron\u00adteiras\u201d, published in 2011 (German: \u201cGren\u00adzen \u00fcber\u00adschre\u00aditen\u201d), Ros\u00e2n\u00adgela Nasci\u00admento exam\u00adines this partic\u00adu\u00adlar chap\u00adter of the Conter\u00adgan scan\u00addal. The subti\u00adtle \u201cTalido\u00admida, a impunidade continua\u201d \u2013 \u201cThalido\u00admide, Impunity Contin\u00adues\u201d \u2013 captures the book\u2019s central message: in the author\u2019s view, respon\u00adsi\u00adbil\u00adity for the ongo\u00ading harm has still not been adequately addressed to this day.<\/p>\n
Ros\u00e2n\u00adgela Nasci\u00admento, who was herself born in 1961 with thalidomide-related damage, has been campaign\u00ading for the rights of those affected for many years. As former Pres\u00adi\u00addent of the Brazil\u00adian Asso\u00adci\u00ada\u00adtion of Thalido\u00admide Survivors (ABVT), she advo\u00adcated in partic\u00adu\u00adlar for social recog\u00adni\u00adtion, appro\u00adpri\u00adate compen\u00adsa\u00adtion, and improved living conditions.<\/p>\n
Her book combines personal expe\u00adri\u00adences with the polit\u00adi\u00adcal debate about the conse\u00adquences of the phar\u00adma\u00adceu\u00adti\u00adcal scan\u00addal. It draws atten\u00adtion to the situ\u00ada\u00adtion of differ\u00adent gener\u00ada\u00adtions of thalido\u00admide survivors and high\u00adlights how impor\u00adtant effec\u00adtive protec\u00adtive measures, public aware\u00adness, and taking respon\u00adsi\u00adbil\u00adity are.<\/p>\n
