How can medical care for people with Thalido\u00admide damage be improved? The second day of the \u201cEgmond Circle\u201d congress focused on new research, prac\u00adti\u00adcal support, and expe\u00adri\u00adences from vari\u00adous countries.<\/strong><\/p>\n

When exper\u00adtise is miss\u00ading in an emergency<\/strong><\/p>\n

A man suffers a stroke \u2013 but his symp\u00adtoms are not initially recog\u00adnized. Using this case, Prof. h. c. Dr. Stephan Martin, head of the MMK at DIAKOVERE Annas\u00adtift in Hanover, demon\u00adstrated the conse\u00adquences that a lack of knowl\u00adedge about Thalido\u00admide damage can have. He advo\u00adcated for better emer\u00adgency care and inter\u00adna\u00adtional coop\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion. Surg\u00aderies also need to be care\u00adfully prepared: Which move\u00adments are indis\u00adpens\u00adable in every\u00adday life? What aids will be needed afterwards?<\/p>\n

Special\u00adized medi\u00adcine and new research<\/strong><\/p>\n

Prof. Dr. Klaus M. Peters, as direc\u00adtor, intro\u00adduced the Multi\u00addis\u00adci\u00adpli\u00adnary Medical Compe\u00adtence Center (MMK) at the Dr. Becker Rhein-Sieg-Klinik in N\u00fcmbrecht. There, vari\u00adous special\u00adties work together to treat conse\u00adquen\u00adtial damage, chronic pain, and age-related illnesses in partic\u00adu\u00adlar. Special\u00adized care is also being further devel\u00adoped at the Univer\u00adsity Hospi\u00adtal of Cologne.<\/p>\n

A major study presented by PD Dr. Carsten Giet\u00adzen from the Univer\u00adsity Hospi\u00adtal of Cologne is inves\u00adti\u00adgat\u00ading the state of the heart and blood vessels in people with Thalido\u00admide damage. Ultra\u00adsound and contrast-agent-free MRI are intended to help better iden\u00adtify health risks. The study runs until 2028; further partic\u00adi\u00adpants are being sought.<\/p>\n

Reports from Ireland and Japan<\/strong><\/p>\n

Marie Kehoe\u2011O\u2019Sullivan provided insights into care in Ireland. There, the National Thalido\u00admide Advo\u00adcacy Office supports survivors with medical and social issues. Offer\u00adings include regu\u00adlar check-ups and access to health services regard\u00adless of income. One chal\u00adlenge remains bring\u00ading special\u00adized knowl\u00adedge into primary care.<\/p>\n

Yukari Masuyama reported from Japan on how diffi\u00adcult it is there to receive contin\u00adu\u00adous treat\u00adment tailored to Thalido\u00admide damage. After a visit to Germany, she founded the \u201cOne Team\u201d initia\u00adtive in 2024. Through it, she advo\u00adcates for better access to health\u00adcare and the rights of survivors. In Egmond, she called for shar\u00ading knowl\u00adedge and expe\u00adri\u00adences across borders.<\/p>\n

What helps in every\u00adday life<\/strong><\/p>\n

How can pain be relieved and falls avoided? The work\u00adshop led by Prof. h. c. Dr. Stephan Martin and his team from Hanover focused on targeted train\u00ading, indi\u00advid\u00adual aids, and vari\u00adous treat\u00adment options. A prac\u00adti\u00adcal tip: Even before a fall occurs, think about and, if possi\u00adble, prac\u00adtice how to get back up \u2013 and how helpers can provide the right support. Further work\u00adshops and focus groups offered space to delve deeper into health and personal questions.<\/p>\n

Whether emer\u00adgency care, research projects, or every\u00adday help: The second day of the congress made it clear how valu\u00adable the knowl\u00adedge of the survivors them\u00adselves is.
